WSA Travel Soccer FAQs

What is Travel Soccer?
Travel Soccer is a program designed to develop youth players beyond what is typically learned in recreation leagues. Westlake teams are formed at seven different age levels and play against teams from other communities in Northeast Ohio. In Westlake, the program is run by the Board of the Westlake Soccer Association, which oversees the in-house league. Teams play one game per week and practice twice weekly during the season.

At what age do children start playing travel soccer?
Children usually start in second grade depending on their date of birth. However, the program always looks for interested players at almost every age group. Teams play together through their eighth grade year and new players are always welcome.

How do I know if my child is ready for Travel?
Travel soccer practices twice weekly for between 60 and 90 minutes and plays competitive games. While there is no hard and fast rule for when to move to Travel, children should be both emotionally and physically ready for a more rigorous program and committed to attending practices and games.

How much travel is involved?
Teams play eight games in the fall and eight games in the spring. For each session, four of the games will be in Westlake. Of the four away games, there will usually be two games involving less than a half-hour travel (i.e., Bay Village or North Olmsted) and two involving 30 to 45 minutes away (i.e., Strongsville or Medina). Games are usually played on Sunday afternoons.

Who coaches the teams?
Coaches are selected and directed by the Westlake Soccer Association’s Board and Travel Commissioners. Coaches are usually parents with prior coaching experience. All coaches must register with OHTSL, complete a background check, and SafeSport training. Many WSA coaches also possess licenses from the U.S. Soccer Federation and United Soccer Coaches, issued only after the candidate completes the mandated hours of classroom and on-the-field training.

In addition to the volunteer parent coaches, WSA offers professional coaches to assist teams with player development.

What other types of professional coaching is available?
WSA’s travel program aligns with professional coaches in the area to offer additional programming to our travel players and teams. These coaches include high school coaches with advanced coaching licenses, professional coaches from local clubs as well current and former professional players. Programming includes goalie training, strength and agility training, footskills clinics, camps and more.

How are teams selected?
Each spring, open tryouts are held for any child between the ages of 7 and 14, who lives in or attends school in Westlake. There is normally at least one team for every age group, and WSA tries to ensure room on each team for all who try out. Players are placed on ability-based teams based on their birth year. This age-specific grouping is crucial for several reasons. First, it ensures a level playing field, as children of the same age are likelier to have similar physical and cognitive development. This similarity in development stages helps create competitive balance and fairness in games. Second, it facilitates age-appropriate coaching and skill development. Coaches can tailor their training to the specific needs and abilities of the age group, thereby enhancing the learning experience for the players. Last, it helps build camaraderie and social bonds among players of the same age group, contributing to a more cohesive team environment.
