Futsal FAQs

Q: What is futsal?

A: Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small-sided soccer game played worldwide and officially recognized by FIFA and UEFA. It is a 5v5 small-sided game played on a hard surface, like a basketball court, with a smaller, low-bounce ball. Futsal is played with touchline boundaries and without walls.

Q: Why should my soccer player try futsal?

A:  Futsal greatly emphasizes technical skill in high-pressure situations, which can be translated to the outdoor game. The sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pin-point passing.

The top priority of Futsal, and WSA, is to motivate players in an environment conducive to learning. The more joy kids derive from participating, the more they wish to play and practice independently. While their instinct to play is natural, their affection and appreciation for soccer must be cultivated. Futsal is the foundation for such goals because it:

  • Allows players to touch the ball frequently.
  • It presents many opportunities to score goals and score goals often.
  • Encourages regaining possession of the ball as a productive, fun, and rewarding part of the game (defending).
  • Maximizes active participation and minimizes inactivity and boredom.
  • Reflects the philosophy of player development expressed in state and national coaching schools.
  • Eliminates complicated rules such as off-sides that may hinder youngsters from “playing.”

Q: What does my player need to wear for futsal?

A: Players must wear shin guards covered by soccer socks, indoor soccer flats or athletic sneakers. Players can wear comfortable athletic clothing. Cleats are strictly prohibited.

Q: Does my player need any additional gear?

A: It’s helpful to have a size 4 futsal ball, but not required. Players will also need a water bottle.

Q: What coaches will run these sessions?

A: WSA is working with professional, club-level coaches to run each of these sessions for our players. These coaches have experience with futsal and coaching youth programs.

Q: I’m interested in getting involved, either by coaching, helping to organize games, or setting up/breaking down the courts. How do I sign up to volunteer?

A: Please contact our Winter Commissioner, Mark Purcell, here.

Q: Can I sign up for both sessions?

A: Of course! Players are welcome to sign up for one or both sessions. Each session has a dedicated registration link.

Q: What if I have to miss one week?

A: No problem! We know conflicts arise and absences happen. While we will miss your player, futsal will proceed without interruption, and when your child returns, they can jump right back in.
