Coaches Code of Conduct

The vision of the Westlake Soccer Association (WSA) is to assist and teach our entire community of players the game of recreational and competitive soccer by developing tactical and technical skills and important life lessons that will provide them a foundation to reach their highest goals later in life, whether athletic or personal. All players are important members of their teams and our soccer community and are treated with respect, thoughtfulness, and esteem. Both the needs of the individual and the team are stressed with equal importance as practices and games are conducted with thought, preparation and a long-term outlook first in mind. Healthy competition is supported and fostered as a necessary means for our young athletes to learn these valuable lessons.
We accomplish this vision through the following:

Development: Creating a culture where soccer players can develop as people and athletes, building their self-esteem, confidence, and ability to their fullest potential.

Sportsmanship: Providing a safe, sportsmanlike atmosphere for healthy competition.

Teamwork: Succeeding as a team, on and off the field, through the collective help of our board, coaches, players, parents and volunteers.

WSA Coaches have the privilege of bringing our mission and vision to life. They will be able to teach soccer skills and the game and, more importantly, coach the players on important life values, such as sportsmanship, commitment, self-respect and respect for others.

Adherence to this code of conduct is required for all coaches participating in WSA. Furthermore, WSA accepts responsibility for the behavior of its members. Disciplinary action may be taken against anyone who fails to comply with this code.

WSA Coach's Pledge

Upholding the Code of Conduct for Player Well-being and Sportsmanship

As an appointed coach of WSA, I pledge to follow the Coaches’ Code of Conduct:

  • I will place the emotional and physical well-being of the players under my care ahead of a personal desire to win.
  • I will treat each player as an individual, remembering the large range of emotional and physical development that can exist.
  • I will ensure each player receives substantial playing time, recognized not by their skill but rather by their effort and preparation.
  • I will do my best to provide and uphold a safe sports environment.
  • I will actively review and adhere to required safety laws and regulations.
  • I will refrain from using alcohol or tobacco products in the presence of players. I will never use drugs.
  • To the best of my ability, I will explain my goals and objectives for the team, as well as the rules of the game and the league’s policies.
  • I will keep an open line of communication with the players and parents.
  • I will never ridicule or yell at any child or participant for making a mistake or losing a game.
  • I will remember that I am a youth sports coach and that the game is for children and not adults.
  • I will lead by example in demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship for all my players. I will be modest in victory and gracious in defeat.
  • I will not engage in any questionable conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent, such as booing, taunting, profane language or gestures. I will follow WSA’s three-step process when there is a game day conflict:
    1. Politely remind the person(s), one time, of the rule(s).
    2. Then, engage the referee to handle the situation.
    3. Finally, decide to cease or finish play, reporting the issue to WSA.
  • I will be honest, fair, and trustworthy in all my actions as a representative of WSA and acknowledge that I am always responsible for my conduct.
  • I understand the WSA board can remove me as a coach with or without warning if my conduct is not synonymous with this code.
